My name is Val Hutchinson and I am vice-chair of Richland County Council.  I represent District #9 in the Northeast.  I am a former teacher and Master Gardener, and ran for office for the first time in my life almost 4 years ago. My community took a chance on supporting a political newcomer and community activist, and I have worked hard ever since to protect their quality of life and make government more responsive to them. I hope I can count on your support as I run for re-election!

I have an opponent in the JUNE 10 Republican primary, and I need you to vote at that time, or ahead of time by absentee ballot. You can call now (803) 576-2240 to get a ballot or go down to the County Building at Harden and Hampton St. and vote in person. There’s more information, if you click here, or on absentee ballot in the bar above.

The County is now heading in a better direction, balancing growth with natural resource protection! We have been actively engaged in a strategic planning process that sets priorities for the next 5 years.  We have started meeting with the Midlands Council of Governments and Lexington County on a regional approach to clean water, clean air, and planning.  Roads and infrastructure are key to economic growth, and we are currently working on a transportation  plan that citizens will be able to vote on in the November election.

These issues, plus providing better recreational opportunities, are the reasons I have chosen to seek another term.    I particularly want to see through the development of the Regional Recreation Complex located in the Northeast.

So many good changes are on the way for Richland County and the Northeast, and so many of you have participated in making those changes happen. I thank you for your active citizenship, and hope you will continue to help me move the County toward more responsible, sustainable growth.
